ELKHART - Ruth B. Horst, 92, passed away in her home Wednesday, Sept. 24, surrounded by family.
She was born May 5, 1922, in Denbigh (Newport News), Va., to Henry and Nora (Kraus) Brunk. She was one of eight children - four girls and then four boys.
On Oct. 20, 1945, she married Elton Martin of Harrisonburg, Va. After only four months of marriage, he was killed in a tragic auto accident that also left Ruth critically injured and with a long recovery.
On May 5, 1951, Ruth married Ray E. Horst of Akron, Pa., who preceded her in death July 20, 2013.
She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Heydon of Elkhart, with children Robert and Amber; son Ray Edward (Barb) Horst of Oakland, Calif., with children Lauren, Matthew and Nathan; and foster daughter Jean (David) Luadzers of Jefferson City, Mo., with children Mark Owen, Melissa Johnson and Erin Golden. Also surviving are her brothers, Nelson (Ruth) Brunk, Henry (Edna) Brunk and Joseph (Mary Louise) Brunk, all of Harrisonburg.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Esther (Norman) Loux, Ellen (Earl) Griffin and Alma (Leonard) Baer, and brother Perry (Fern) Brunk.
Ruth spent her early years, which coincided with the Great Depression, growing up in and around Washington, D.C. She had many interesting stories that related to growing up in a large family in that time and place. When she was in her teens, the family moved to Harrisonburg, where Ruth graduated from Eastern Mennonite High School and attended college for a short time. In her later years, Harrisonburg, with its beautiful mountains and family connections, was the area she longed to return to.
In 1954, Ray took a job at Mennonite Board of Missions (now Mission Network) and they moved to Elkhart. At that time they became members of Prairie Street Mennonite Church, where they remained very active through the rest of their lives.
Ray's job required him to travel a lot. Ruth was always a full partner in Ray's work; her role and calling was to maintain a strong and well-functioning home base and family. She was a loving mother, a superb organizer, excellent financial manager, had great problem-solving and engineering abilities, and loved nature and natural beauty, especially flowers and birds. When she had free time she enjoyed doing counted cross stitch and other crafts.
Ruth loved to travel and meet new people and she often accompanied Ray on his travels. During her life she traveled to Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia and 49 of the 50 U.S. states (all except Arkansas, for some reason).
Ruth had a genuine interest in people. She didn't hesitate to talk with all sorts of strangers, sometimes to her children's embarrassment. Her love and generosity did not limit itself to her family, but extended to all she came in contact with.
Visitation will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, at Prairie Street Mennonite Church, with burial and a time of sharing to follow.
Memorial contributions may be given to Mennonite Central Committee. Online condolences may be sent at www.hartzlergutermuthinman.com.

Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Hostetler, 88, longtime resident of College Station and recent transplant to Bryan, passed away just as she would have wished, in her home, on Friday, January 31, 2014. Ever the educator, Beth chose to donate her body to the Texas A&M University College of Medicine.
Born on July 20, 1925, in Goshen, IN, Beth was the daughter of the late Silas and Anna Rose (Weaver) Hertzler. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Robert L. Hostetler and a younger brother, Paul Hertzler. Beth is survived by her brother, John Hertzler and two sisters, Charlotte Croyle and Joanne DeVilbiss. She was extremely proud of her son, Greg Hostetler, her daughter, Renee Hostetler, their spouses, Catherine LeDuc Hostetler and Mark Huibregtse, and her beloved only grandchild, Lydia Huibregtse.
Beth graduated from Goshen High School in 1943 and received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Goshen College in 1947. Her teaching career also started in Goshen. She taught Kindergarten there for two years before traveling to Europe as a relief worker for the Mennonite Central Committee from 1949-1951.
Beth then had a long teaching career spanning the years 1951-1990 (with a 1954 Master of Arts in Education degree from Ball State thrown in for good measure). She taught first grade in College Station at both the College Hills Elementary and South Knoll Schools. She became a frequently requested teacher, known for her kindness, creativity, respect and genuine love for her students.
Beth's Christian faith was very important to her. She grew up Mennonite, but became an Episcopalian in later life. She loved attending St. Thomas Episcopal Church and singing in the choir. The last two vows of the Episcopal baptismal covenant are "Will you seek to serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?" and "Will you strive for justice and peace among all people and respect the dignity of every human being?". Beth was loved by those whose lives she touched because she truly lived those vows.
Following Beth's wishes, there will be no funeral. A brief time of music and sharing stories was held at Arbor Oaks, her last place of residence. Her children hope you will share memories and tributes to Beth at www.hillierfuneralhome.com.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Beth to Hospice Brazos Valley www.hospicebrazosvalley.org, 502 W. 26th Street, Bryan, TX 77803 and/or Methodist Retirement Communities www.mrcaff.org, c/o Donna Williams, 2505 Villa Maria Road, Bryan, TX 77802.
